Southwark Council is due to decide this month whether to open a statutory consultation on relocating Beormund School.
The council awarded a £14,949,861 contract in May 2025 for the "construction of Beormund Primary School". Neilcott Construction Limited holds it.
The construction record places that new building at "the former Bellenden School site". The consultation notice names no destination for the school.
The contract runs 75 weeks from May 2025, which reaches about October 2026. It is now 15 months in.
The issue record describes the decision as one "To agree to initiate a statutory consultation on proposals to relocate the Beormund School".
The council published notice on 8 July, with a decision due in August. It classes the decision as key on the threshold "Significant impact on the community", and lists all wards as affected.
Councillor Rebecca Corn, the Executive Member for Education and Care, is listed as lead member.
The build is running behind the timetable the council first set. Its procurement strategy of 1 March 2023 approved main works "for a period of 14 months commencing in August 2023", which would have finished them around October 2024.
That strategy did not publish the budget. It put the main works at "an estimated value as identified in the closed version of this report". It approved £507k of enabling works separately.
Neither gateway record says what kind of school Beormund is, or how many pupils it has. The council's schools and education pages do not list individual schools, and the Department for Education's schools register and the school's own website could not be consulted for this story.
Southwark has run this process recently. It agreed on 30 April 2025 "to commence a statutory consultation on the expansion of the Cherry Garden Special School to a satellite provision located within the Bellenden Primary School".
Cabinet approved that expansion on 17 June, 48 days later.
The council has reorganised much of its school estate. Its decisions register records the closure of Comber Grove Primary School and Ann Bernadt Nursery School in 2024, and proposals in 2025 to close St Mary Magdalene CE Primary School and Charlotte Sharman Primary School.
The register also records expansions of Highshore and Cherry Garden special schools in 2025.
The register carries no Beormund relocation decision between 1 January and 15 August. The council's notice puts the decision in August.
Still unanswered
The documents this story was reported from do not answer these questions.
- Whether the relocation being consulted on is the move into the new building at the former Bellenden School site, on what date it would happen, and what the consultation asks: the consultation issue record names no destination, no date and no questions, and the accompanying report could not be consulted for this story.
- What kind of school Beormund is and how many pupils it has: neither the 2023 procurement strategy nor the 2025 construction award describes the provision or its capacity, the council's schools and education pages do not list individual schools, and the Department for Education's Get Information About Schools register and the school's own website could not be consulted for this story.
- The main works budget Southwark approved at Gateway 1 in March 2023, against which the £14,949,861 award of May 2025 could be set: the record places that figure "as identified in the closed version of this report".
